Capturing RAW files enables a broad scale of possibilities for tweaking your images, as RAW files have the full range of the captured information available from your camera. Capture One is focused on getting the most out of every RAW file. All supported camera models and lenses have custom tailored profiles to ensure the best colors and details available. Capture One provides a fast, flexible solution for editing any supported RAW file.
Finally, the last missing feature from years of using Apple’s Aperture has come to Capture One: do not duplicate images during import. Oh, how sweet this feature is! My workflow has adapted to ingesting images less and tethering more frequently, but when flying my Phantom 4 Pro quadcopter, I import images between battery changes as much as possible. Not that I plan on losing my quadcopter, but it is the only camera I use without redundancy in the form of storage. Never mind that it’s 400 feet overhead; I bring my 13″ MacBook Pro and Capture One with me when I fly to import frequently. Having Capture One reliably filter and exclude duplicate images that have already been imported is welcomed a time saver.
Phase One largely left the user interface alone in the jump from 10 to 11. Instead, like most new software releases, Capture One is focused on improving the speed and performance of its RAW editor and image manager. Among the areas targeted for a speed boost are the catalog and layers. Opening catalogs, making slider adjustments, masking and other edits are all speedier in version 11.

Layers (formerly called “local adjustments”) are also substantially improved. Indeed, they’re the lynchpin of the new update. All of the software’s adjustment tools are now compatible with layered editing. New tools have been added to refine and feather a mask after drawing, or adjust the opacity of a layer to control the impact of local adjustments. Capture One Styles, a series of image presets that are sold separately, can also be applied as a layer. Also new is the ability to annotate images. What’s not new: While the software supports over 400 cameras, Phase One is still snubbing its medium-format camera competitors. There’s no support for Pentax, Hasselblad or Fujifilm medium-format bodies, an omission that strikes us as anti-consumer.
Checking and verifying cards after importing is another area where this tool is remarkably useful. Once images are imported, I typically check files on memory cards in the camera against what was imported into Capture One. I back up to a second card in the camera, so typically I can do that comparison side by side. Having Capture One confirm if all images on a card were imported into a catalog is not only convenient but reaffirming. I try really hard not to format a card until a job is complete, which includes backing up locally to a RAID 5 array, then to a second drive at my desk, to SmugMug, as well as offsite on another physical drive. If I’m super busy, sometimes that means shooting on a card again so it can be backed up again before formatting it, and this feature automatically eliminates any redundancy.
Initially, I was confused at the absence of the layers tab, given that every tool can now be applied to a layer. With layer dependent blending and opacities now available, it seemed odd that the tool tab would disappear. After using the software in a workflow, it became clear that it was no longer necessary since so many new tools (every tool except black and white, film grain) can be applied to a layer. It makes sense once you get going, and while it would seem to deserve its own space, it’s better integrated into color corrections and retouching throughout the other tool tabs. Feathering and layer masking with refinements, plus layer opacity adjustments available after the fact, will take image corrections to a whole new level without having to leave Capture One! I’ve found that images requiring extensive retouching and layer adjustments end up being finished last so as not to have to leave Capture One. The more functionality it has natively, the less time it takes to leave the software.
- Control the impact of your local adjustments by changing the opacity of each layer. Once adjustments are made across as many tools as needed, simply drag the opacity slider to decrease the overall impact of the layer.
- Softening the edges of a mask after drawing is simplified with the Feather Mask feature. Avoid having to redraw masks by simply dragging a slider to feather the edges.
The Refine Edge lets you make a more precise edge on your mask. Create a clean and adjustable mask with many uses, for example, picking out hair against a background. Use with the improved Auto Mask function for precision results
- When applying a crop in Capture One, you can now use the Export Path to include the crop as a path when you export to PSD. By storing the crop as a Path in your exported PSD file, the full image can be used for retouching or even alternate cropping at a later stage.
- The Duplicate Checker makes sure that you don’t import the same file twice in your Catalog or Session. The robust catching-mechanism ensures that importing the difference from the last import is easy and efficient.
- Improved handling of color makes sure layered color adjustments work to perfection. The Color Balance, Color Editor, White Balance and other tools have been re-engineered to show smoother transitions between each layer.
- The overall performance of Capture One has been increased, which gives a smoother and faster experience when editing. This is especially helpful when fine-tuning adjustments
- Visualize your mask without the distraction of the image by switching to Grey Scale. Missed areas of your mask are now easily caught and corrected
